It is with great sadness the Suburbs RFC informs you that Life Member John Carter (Snr) passed away.
John joined Suburbs in 1948 as a 9 year old playing in the midget grade, winning many championships. His first year playing senior grade was 1958, and the coach was Ivan Paterson. The team contained such notable players as Cleave Anderson, Ray Borley, Russ Cahill, Trevor Gill, Ian Paterson and Jack Prior, to mention a few.
Having retired from senior rugby after the 1972 season, he then commenced coaching the senior team in 1974 with “Bones” Goodwin (who was also a member of the 1948 midget team), and winning Suburbs first Gallaher Shield in 1977.
In 1975 When John wrote to the Argentine Rugby Union early in the year seeking possible games, he received a reply far more favourable than anybody expected. The Argentine Union agreed to meet all internal travel, accommodation, meals and laundry expenses for the official Suburbs party of 23 players, coaches John Carter and Don Goodwin and Club Chairman Keith Lawson. As well, John received a seven match itinerary for Argentina and a game against a Chilean selection.
After many years of service to Suburbs on and off the field In 1987 John was elected as a Life Member.
John was also Suburbs Senior Delegate 1989 – 1994, after stepping down from this role John was the manager of the very successful Auckland Ranfurly Rugby team in the late 90’s
Our condolences to his wife Peggy and children John (Jnr), Mark, Rachael and his grandchildren.
