Presidents Report 2012
Watching the Premiers playing last year, it was easy to see there has been a progression from the previous season, one hopes that in 2012 we can see Suburbs at least in the top four. All teams have coaches in place for the year; hopefully Colleges have noticed the improvement skill wise in the Premier side and will decide to join us. Last year James Cameron organised a major ‘mail drop’ for the Jnr Boys – this will again be done incorporating the Senior side also.
Fundraising last year was fairly quiet and we did not run the 100 club for a couple of reasons - The  downturn  in  the  economy  made selling $100 tickets restrictive  -   and the departure of Bryan Curtis to Australia left us without one of our main avenues of ticket disposal -  this also reflected on the lack of patronage on Friday nights also affecting raffle sales.
It was our turn to host the Suburbs vs. Waitemata luncheon.  Great to catch up with some  Old  Boys who we have not seen for a while. Thanks to the combined efforts of Kath Dowd, Jan and Clive Peachey, Peter Osborne, Chrissy Eades, Ted Atkins, Red McCabe and Henry Collins.  Also thanks to Stefan Crooks for the donation of the Ham and savories.
Also on our agenda was BBQ’s for both Senior  and  Junior prize givings. Pleasing to note two sections in the Jnr. Boys was required because of the increase of player numbers.
The Old Boys purchased a mobile scoreboard for Shadbolt Park – we were prompted to because of one particular game in which even the Referee and line umpires recorded an incorrect score. This was sorted out by the video of the game and the score was subsequently changed.
The annual Suburbs Old Boys Golf Day, organised by Ted Atkins  was played at Huapai Golf Club – this year it was won by Gus Cole who played great golf to win the ‘Fred Lovett Cup’.
Alterations are starting to happen at Shadbolt Park clubrooms with the planter boxes inside being removed. It  is  a  start  and  hopefully  soon  we can have premises than can attract members back to club.
Congratulations to Stefan Crooks on winning the Ideal Club Member (‘Mick Gibson Memorial’) Stefan coaches, is a sponsor and is on the finance and executive committees.
Although a fairly quiet year to those on the Old Boys Committee a ‘Thank you’ to
Ted Atkins, Allan McLeod, Peter Osborne, Red McCabe, Jim Chisholm, Clive Peachey and Chrissy Eades.

Lloyd Dowd
President

Fourways Golf Tournament.

13th February 2010

The Fourways Golf Tournament between Suburbs and College Rifles Rugby and Otahuhu and Ellerslie League Old Boys Associations was played at the Waikare Golf Club’s course at Te Kauwhata on Sunday 13th February. Suburbs were this years hosts of this long running event, over 30 years I believe. We had a brilliant day for golf and all Clubs had full teams of 12, and for the umpteenth time Otahuhu took the title with a total of 415 combined stableford points, and once again Suburbs were the bridesmaids lagging behind by 21 points. Our best scorer was Bruce Hammond with 38 points, with only Colin Farrell, runner  up with an 82 for gross, Mike Russell nearest the pin on the 11th hole and Murray McLeod with a hole in two, featuring in the prize list. The hosts for 2012 are College Rifles, bring it on!

Club Golf Championship Huapai Golf Club.

21st November 2010

It took him over a period of 23 years to become the winner of the Suburbs Golf Championship and the holder of the Fred Lovett Cup. Mark Birtwistle played his first Championship in 1983, his first year playing for the Suburbs senior team and has been a regular competitor ever since . Twenty three dedicated members battled the elements once again, it didn’t rain as it has in recent years, however it was uncomfortably windy and low scores were rare. The Old Boys would like to thank BJ for the support from the Owens Group of trucks for their contribution of the awards.
